Abstract

The mucus of the solitary mushroom coral, Fungia scutaria. purified of particulate contamination and low molecular weight solutes, was assayed for a variety of trophic parameters, including caloric value. elemental composition (C, N and P), lipid content, total protein content and amino acid composition. The caloric value and C:N ratio suggested a predominantly carbohydrate composition with some protein. Both the lipid and protein analyses supported this interpretation. The amino acid composition was typical of mucus glycoproteins. The phosphorus content was very low. An apparent acid mucopolysaccharide (AMPS) was isolated from a papain digest of the mucus. Electrophoretic evidence suggested that this AMPS is normally associated with protein in the undigested mucus. The compositional evidence indicates that the mucus of F. scutaria is relatively low in trophic quality.
