Section 9: Are calcareous algae important to reefs today or in the past?

Abstract

Calcareous green algae (Chlorophyta), particularly of the genus Halimeda, are important sources of reef carbonate. The algae are prominent in most reef habitats, developing and maintaining large populations in lagoons and fore-reefs and growing over mounded sediment accumulations on shelves which often are called Halimeda bioherms. Estimates of carbonate production by calcareous green algal populations occupying different reef habitats lead to a first budget. Estimated total global carbonate production by these algae is 4 X 10. metric tons/yr, or about 8% of total global carbonate production and about 83% of estimated coral carbonate production. It is likely that carbonate production by Halimeda in deeper waters provides a significant part of the total reef carbonate budget.
