Abstract
|
There exists an increasing need for the evaluation and understanding of the effectiveness of marine protected areas (MPAs) operating around the world. To meet this need, in 2000 the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas-Marine and the World Wide Fund for Nature jointly initiated the MPA Management Effectiveness Initiative, an international collaborative project designed to create a methodology for planning and conducting performance evaluations of MPA management effectiveness using a set of biophysical, socioeconomic, and governance indicators. This paper presents an overview of this methodology and the in potential application in coral reef environments, and presents the experience of how the methodology was applied by managers at the Tubbataha Reef National Marine Park in the Philippines. The paper illustrates how the methodology presented has relevance for MPAs that are situated in tropical, nearshore marine ecosystems and how it can be used to incorporate the evaluation of management effectiveness into priorities for coral reef conservation.
