Proceedings of the Eight International Coral Reef Symposium, 1996
The Eight International Coral Reef Symposium was jointly organized by University of Panama and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, in Panama City from June 24-29, 1996. 1220 participants from 62 countries attended the symposium.
Approximately 790 papers were presented in 32 mini symposia, together with a total of 140 posters. Nine workshops were conducted during the symposium. The symposium proceedings comprised two volumes, with 340 papers published.

Abstract
|
Early this century, lush coral reefs lined the shore of
pago Pago Harbor, American Samoa. Since then. the harbor
has undergone urbanization and become a busy port, as well
as the site of two tuna canneries. As a result, the reefs
have experienced major dredging and filling operations as
well as chronic pollution over many decades. In recent
years the reefs have also endured two severe hurricanes and
a mass coral bleaching event. This study focuses on the
changes that have occurred on the .Aua Transect. in the
harbor, based on three quantitative surveys over the last
78 years: 1917 (Mayor 1924a) , 1973 (Dahl and Lamberts 1977)
and 1995 (this study). There have been dramatic changes in
the coral reef community at Aua this century. Coral
species richness. abundance, cover and colony size have
decreased. and the relative abundance of coral genera has
changed. Coral zonation patterns have also changed and
some .zones. have completely disappeared. Diversity of
Acropora species and the density of some other
macroinvertebrates (holothurians and soft corals) are also
much lower now.

Abstract

A combined study of sediment cores and coral cores
from an area of the Great Barrier Reef lagoon has
revealed striking evidence of anthropogenic input
into the reef system. The use of mercury in gold
extraction in the Burdekin River catchment area from
1869, coupled with an abnormally high rain fall
between 1870-80 -as evidenced by a reconstruction of
river flow from coral fluorescent bands -has
resulted in a twenty five fold increase in mercury
concentration in a section of sediment.

In the lagoon of Tahiti, like in other shallow coastal waters presenting strong allochthonous inputs, benthic heterotrophs play an important role in the eutrophication process through nutrient regeneration. However, due to the large heterogeneity of trophic conditions, lagoon-scale determination of bacteriobenthic processes is nearly impossible to achieve. We then investigated whether bacteriobenthos biomass and productivity were related to organic matter content in the lagoon of Tahiti. These variables were determined in the aerobic top cm of soft bottom sediments along different transects covering a wide range of trophic conditions. Strong variations were recorded between the sites (5, 30 and 900 fold for organic content, bacterial abundance and productivity respectively) with maximum values in channel areas receiving large organic inputs; minimum values were found in undisturbed areas like the barrier reef.
