Proceedings of the Eight International Coral Reef Symposium, 1996
The Eight International Coral Reef Symposium was jointly organized by University of Panama and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, in Panama City from June 24-29, 1996. 1220 participants from 62 countries attended the symposium.
Approximately 790 papers were presented in 32 mini symposia, together with a total of 140 posters. Nine workshops were conducted during the symposium. The symposium proceedings comprised two volumes, with 340 papers published.

Abstract
|
Ammonium affinity of sediments, contributions of biological
uptake and adsorption to the affinity, and effects of fertilizer
treatIlents on the affinity were examined. Studies were done on
microatolls of One Tree Reef, Australia, which were subjected to different fertilizer treatIlents for the ~RE project. Sanples of sediments frau the microatolls were transported to the laboratory, spiked with solutions of alTIIDIlium chloride , and incubated at ambient water tatperatures in partial shade .The IIean value of anroonium affinity was l46011M NIl, m-2 h-l. Adsorption accounted for most ammonium affinity on a short term scale, e.g. , min. , and biological uptake accounted for most anroonium affinity on along term scale. e.g. .h. Values of ammonium affinity were unrelated to fertilizer treatIlents of the microatolls .

Abstract
|
A variety of methods for assessing the nutrient status of marine plants have been applied to zooxanthellae from corals and sea anemones. Mitotic indices increase with nutrient supply, while chl a levels decrease. Elemental ratios (C:N, C:P) increase with N(P) limitation, as do
cellular inclusions associated with carbon storage (starch, lipids). Internal amino acid (IAA) pools, particularly the relative amounts of basic amino acids, are reliable indicators of N-sufficiency in zooxanthellae. Basic IAA form a greater percentage of the pool in symbionts
from well-fed sea anemones. Ammonium enhancement of dark carbon fixation is greater in N-limited zooxanthellae, as does the uptake of dissolved inorganic nitrogen. Most of these techniques have been used in experimental work under laboratory conditions, and their application to field situations is needed.

Abstract
|
DOC is widely recognized as one of the largest carbon
standing stocks on the earth but still, little is known
about D pC utilization by bacterioplankton and its
subsequent transfer in pelagic foodwebs. The estimation
of carbon growth yield (CGY) is key to the evaluation of
the contribution of bacterioplankton in pelagic
networks. We examined DOC standing stocks, consumption
and turn-over in some Tuamotu atoll lagoons {French
polynesia) and in the Great Astrolabe Reef lagoon
{Fiji) .DOC was determined by a HTCO method. DOC
consumption by bacteria was computed from in situ
bacterial production (following DNA synthesis) and
bacterial CGY experimentally determined in unenriched
batch cultures. Results of these experiments show that
average DOC values range between 105 and 121 pM in the
lagoons visited and were significantly higher than in
surrounding surface oceanic waters (87-102 ~M) .The
labile fraction is estimated to be 14-26~ of total DOC.
Bacterial CGY is very low and ranges between 4 and 7~.
DOC turnover is estimated to be 11 to 32 days in the
lagoons visited. These data suggest that bacteria are
resource limited in these lagoons. This is in agreement
with the slow growth rates of bacterioplankton in these
coral reef lagoons.

Abstract
|
Calcified green seaweeds can become abundant on reefs
because they combine chemical and mineral (= CaCO,) defenses
with nocturnal growth that allows nutritionally
valuable new tissues to be produced during the night
when day-active fishes are not feeding. For herbivores
with acid-mediated digestion, CaCO, alone may strongly
deter feeding by buffering gut pH even when it has no
effect on algal toughness. CaCO, and secondary metabolites
sometimes act synergistically and strongly deter
herbivores that are not deterred by either trait in isolation.
Because these plants experience reduced disturbance
from large generalist consumers, they function as
safe habitats for small animals that avoid consumers by
association with these well-defended seaweeds. A limited
number of small herbivores have specialized on
these noxious plants, often morphologically mimicking
the plant, and sequestering the plants' chemical defenses
for their own protection. A large number of
other small animals (brittlestars, polychaetes, demersal
zooplankton) that do not feed directly on the plant's
tissues use calcified seaweeds as refuge and nursery
habitats where they escape consumers. Defensive characteristics
of calcified red seaweeds are less thoroughly
studied, but chemical defenses appear to be less common
than in the calcified green seaweeds. However, calcified
reds also provide important refuge habitats for
small animals -some of which serve as both herbivores
and mutualists that prevent the host seaweed from being
overgrown by competitors. The defenses of calcified
seaweeds, thus, have important indirect effects that enhance
the diversity of associated reef species by producing
spatial refuges from predation.
