Proceedings of the Seventh International Coral Reef Symposium, 1992
The Seventh International Coral Reef Symposium was organized by the University of Guam Marine Laboratory, under the auspices of the Committee on Coral Reefs of the International Association of Biological Oceanographers and the International Society for Reef Studies in Guam, Micronesia, from 22-27 June 1992.
Presentations were divided into 31 mini symposia and showed an increasing number of papers on management and sustainability of coral reef resources, such as: roles of marines reserves in coral reef fisheries, multispecific modelling of coral reefs as a tool for their management, community-based management of coral reefs, public awareness and education, as keys to coral reef conservation, coastal engineering practices to reduce effects of development on coral reefs, biology and economics of giant clams, natural versus anthropogenic disturbances to coral reefs).

Abstract

Paleoclimatic records preserved in the
skeleton of massive Porites colonies have previ-
ously been retrieved using variations in chemical
composition (Schneider & Smith 1982; Shen et.al
1987; Lea et.al 1989; Linn et.al 1990). X-ray dif-
fractometry is a method for the recognition of crys-
talline substances based upon their crystal structure
and inter-atomic distance. In pure chemical sys-
tems the patterns are perfectly reproducible. How-
ever, in impure, natural systems, small deviations
occur. Powder X-Ray Diffraction analysis was used
on Porites skeletal material removed from a near-
shore and an outer-shelf coral reef.
Results suggest a climate-correlated property ex-
ists within the banded corals. Corals from outer
reefs of the Great Barrier Reef appear to respond
sympathetically to parameters associated with the
Index of the Southern Oscillation. Corals nearer to
shore respond to parameters associated with only
one sector of the SOI, Mean Sea Level Pressure
measured at Darwin, Australia. Periods of ENS0
activity are manifested in both proxy records as a
distinct negative relationship with the relative me-
teorological data sets.

Abstract

Studies at Buck Island Reef National
Monument (St. Croix) and Virgin Islands National
Park (St. John) by scientists in the U.S. National
Park Service Coral Reef Assessment Program re-
vealed the effects of Humcane Hugo on individual
coral species, community parameters, and overall
reef structure. Effects of the storm varied with
depth, coral species, location relative to the storm
path, character of the pre-storm communities, and
ecological history. Live coral cover, initially less
than 30% at all sites, dropped by 40 to 73%. Cover
by the dominant species Montastrea annularis de-
clined about 35% on the St. John reefs. At Buck
Island, Acropora palmata cover, already reduced
from 85% to 5% by white band disease and storms,
fell to 0.8% after Hugo. Some areas on the south
side of Buck Island were reduced to rubble pave-
ment while other areas escaped serious damage.
Data from cores at Buck Island reveal the influence
of wave energy and storm frequency on overall reef
character. Patchiness and variation in the responses
of different species, zones, and entire reefs to the
storm suggest that assessment of long-term trends
in reef structure and composition requires analysis
of changes at permanent study sites distributed over
large areas.

Abstract
|
The ASEAN-Australia Living Coastal Resources project has successfully established and run one of the world's largest regional monitoring programs on coral reefs over the last 7 years. The project has been a collaborative effort between scientists of five ASEAN countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand) and scientists from Australia, principally the Australian Institute of Marine Science. The ~poiect resulted from initiatives by ASEAN senior scientists and is run by these ASEAN scientists through a management committee. Australia provides financial support and some technical assistance. The initial emphasis was on basic techniques, identifying the coral reef benthos as recognizable life form cat- egories and examining fish populations, targeting the species of preference for fishermen and tourists. The techniques have been refined through repeated use in the region, and higher level taxonomic resolution is performed in most countries. All data have been assembled in a regional database maintained in Bangkok, such that regional scale comparisons over a 7 year time span can be performed. The Living Coastal Resources project is seen as a model for conducting large scale monitoring programs involving many different countries, at relatively low cost, and with very few problems.

Abstract
|
Using a synthetised map of biobuilders'
vitality, the incoming nutrient-enriched freshwater
impact on benthic communities was assessed. A
coral community survey was achieved in one rainy
season. Reef water salinity and dissolved inorganic
nutrient content were analysed during a rainy and
a dry season. A high degree of coral mortality (90-
100%) was found on the outer reef flat, where the
dead substrate was covered up to 80°h by boring
sponges. According to hydrology and biological in-
dicators, degradation may be attributed to an ac-
cumulation of organic matter, issued presumably
from sugar cane refinery waste water. Inner Scler-
actinians are submitted to nutrient-enriched
(mainly N) submarine groundwater discharge, but
coral degradation (turf-coral concurrence) was only
found along the inner edge of the reef flat, which
further receives P coming from the necrotized area
of the reef flat.

Abstract
|
Hermatypic corals have been shown to
incorporate particulate matter in their skeletons. By
utilising annual density bands, coral skeletons
could be used to determine past sediment levels and
detect any recent increases that the organism has
experienced, whether from anthropogenic or nat-
ural sources. For this to be a viable method the
process by which sediment becomes incorporated
must be established. A method has been developed
for embedding relatively large sub-samples from
Porites colonies, which contain both coral skeleton
and the associated tissues. This method is designed
to reduce the possible loss of particles from the sam-
ples and limit contamination. A phototransect tech-
nique was used to assess the number and positions
of incorporated particles. This requires initial sur-
face staining of the samples for light microscope
photography, followed by scanning electron micro-
probe analysis to determine the nature of the par-
ticles. Results suggest that sediments from an iso-
lated stressing event (exposure to titanium dioxide
powder for 24 hrs) can be held within the tissues
for at least three months. Scarring of the corallum,
similar to that produced by parrotfish, results in
incorporation of sediments into the skeleton.

Abstract
|
Coral communities under tabulate corals
have been shown to have lower coral abundance,
reduced diversity and different species composition
relative to unshaded communities. It has been pos-
tulated that these patterns result from light atten-
uation which causes high mortality of understorey
coral fauna. In the present study, settlement plates
were placed in the open and under living colonies
of both arborescent and tabulate Acropora species.
Recruitment of juvenile corals onto the settlement
plates was 56 to 73 times greater for the unshaded
plates, relative to those in the understorey. This is
evidence that the successful establishment of cer-
tain colony types may inhibit the settlement of po-
tential competitors. Because recruitment rates were
similar for both tabulate corals and the more open
arborescent colonies, it is unlikely that reduced light
levels were the major cause ofthe lower recruitment
rates of the understorey corals. There was a differ-
ence in the relative abundance of the major taxa of
recruits between the understorey and open settle-
ment plates. The results suggest that settlement
preferences as well as post-settlement processes
probably structure the understorey communities
due to indirect competition from the overtopping
species.

Abstract
|
The occurrence of anthocaulus-like ju-
veniles of Fungia scutaria on encrusted dead coralla
(=parent coralla) of the same species was exam-
ined. These parent coralla bore an average of about
23 juveniles per corallum. The juveniles were more
abundant on the aboral surface than the oral surface
and nearer the edges than the centers of the parent
coralla. Juveniles occurring on the same parent cor-
allum were usually phenotypically identical to each
other suggesting that they were asexual clone mates
rather than recruits from sexually-derived planula.
These juveniles may therefore be derived from re-
sidual tissues left behind in the parent corallum
after its death. The longevity of mesentarial fila-
ments excised from mature corals suggested that
these residual tissues may survive long periods of
time before differentiating into juvenile corals. The
development ofjuveniles from residual tissues may
depend on the removal of the inhibitory influence
of the original parental mouth. Asexual prolifera-
tion of Fungia scutaria from dying parent coralla
may be important in maintaining their populations
on shallow reef flats in Kaneohe Bay, Oahu.

Abstract
|
During 1988-1 990, assessment of coral
reef communities by the transect method intro-
duced by the ASEAN-Australia Cooperative Pro-
gram on Marine Science was made in Thai waters,
Andaman Sea. However, the method was modified
to siut the conditions of coral reefs in the Andaman
Sea. The reefs are found in different environments
ranging from near-shore to near the continental
shelf edge. From a total of 55 transects on 36 reefs,
the average percentage cover (+SD) of live and
dead corals are 39.4% ( -t 19.7%) and 55.4%
( _+ 20.6Yo) respectively. Using an arbitrary category,
11 reef sites are healthy (Oh cover of live to dead
coral >2:1), 25 sites are unhealthy (% cover of live
to dead coral > 1:2) and 19 sites are fair (Oh cover
of live to dead coral in between 2: 1 and 1:2). A total
of 82 positively identified species from 49 genera
of scleractinia were recorded from the transects.
The most abundant species with highest cover are
Porites lutea, Acropora nobilis, A. formosa and
P.(Synaraea ) rus. Coral communities on the off-
shore islands are usually formed of distinct ho-
mogeneous species on slope zones, while those on
near-shore islands are comprised of mixed species.
The sample of long term monitoring during 1988-
1992 of the reefs on the west coast of Phuket Island
show the decrease and increase percent cover of
corals due to humanlnatural impacts and manage-
ment in the area.

Abstract
|
Three species of scleractinian coral,
Montipora digitata M aequituberculata and M. pel-
tijorrnis, spawned twice a year at Magnetic Island,
Queensland. Spawning occurred during autumn
and spring after the full moons in March and Oc-
tober respectively. Monthly gametogenic 'samples
collected for two morphs of M. digitata showed that
fecundity differed between the two morphs, and
that spawning was less intense in March than in
October. Fewer colonies spawned in March and
those which did released fewer gametes. All colonies
that spawned in March also did so in October. Sam-
ples from previous years suggest that the intensity
of the March spawning may vary considerably from
year to year.
