Socioeconomic Information System (SocMon)

Socioeconomic Information System (SocMon)Duration: December 2004 – March 2006
Funding: The John D. and Catherine T. Macarthur Foundation
Website: http://www.reefbase.org/socmon

Objectives
1. To provide technical assistance in the development of locally relevant socioeconomic monitoring protocols.
2. To develop a basic data entry, management and display tool that can be used by local groups to gather and utilize key socioeconomic information.
3. To develop a dedicated set of pages on ReefBase with socioeconomic information related to coral reef resources.

Accomplishments
1. To provide technical assistance in the development of a locally relevant socioeconomic monitoring protocol.

  • Provided technical inputs on database developments and possible synergies between the socioeconomic surveys conducted by the LMMA Network and SocMon during a regional workshop organized by the South Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) in Suva, Fiji (February 2005). The SocMon Pacific protocol is currently pending further development by SPREP and other SocMon partners in the 2nd half of 2006.

  • Provided technical input for the development of a regional monitoring protocol and clear guidelines for a regional database system during a regional SocMon meeting hosted by CORDIO in Mombassa, Kenya (July 2005). The workshop brought together regional partners to discuss current socioeconomic monitoring activities and future needs for the East Africa/West Indian Ocean region. This meeting was followed by a drafting workshop to develop socioeconomic guidelines relevant to the region, using the regional SocMon formats for SE Asia and the Caribbean as working samples. The MS Access SocMon database developed by ReefBase was made available to regional SocMon partners as a template to support further development of a regional database.

2. To develop a basic data entry, management and display tool that can be used by local groups to gather and utilize key socioeconomic information;

  • Established common agreement on the purpose, requirements, and specifications for a SocMon MS Access database, through a planning meeting in Penang, Malaysia (January 2005) between SocMon experts Dr. Bob Pommeroy and Dr. Leah Bunce, and ReefBase technical staff.

  • Developed a MS-Access database for use by SocMon partners for entry and display of summary data from socioeconomic surveys using the SocMon protocols for Southeast Asia and Caribbean. The MS Access database was completed in August 2005 and was provided to the global SocMon Coordinator for further distribution and uptake within the network.

3. To develop a dedicated set of pages on ReefBase which provides access to socioeconomic information from various regions, and on various issues

  • Developed an online information system for SocMon (http://www.reefbase.org/socmon), providing interactive access to summary data from SocMon, in addition to detailed information about the SocMon program.

  • Created an interactive map showing SocMon survey sites in ReefGIS, ReefBase's online Geographic Information System, with direct links to the online SocMon database. This map also features locations of other socioeconomic surveys conducted by LMMA Network, as well as biological monitoring from the ReefBase Monitoring database. (see: http://reefgis.reefbase.org and select "Coral Reef Monitoring" from the map dropdown list).

  • Developed a series of socioeconomic "Key Topics" pages in ReefBase, providing online contents from key publications on topics such as "Poverty & Reefs", "Economic Valuation of Coral Reefs", and "Population, Consumption, and the Environment".
