Provided in the ReefBase Pacific Country Profiles are a collection of information
and data relating to fisheries and livelihoods in the Pacific. The ReefBase Pacific
team, with partners, will continue to update and improve the information presented
within these country profiles.
Country Data
Socio-economic and geographic country data provided here have a variety of sources.
The source is indicated in the table of data and the detail of the reference is
provided by clicking the reference links.
Maps
Three maps are provided within the ReefBase Pacific Country Profiles. The maps provided
here are image files; however these maps can also be viewed through the online Geographic
Information System ' ReefGIS'. This system was developed to display
coral reef related data and information on interactive maps in a web browser. You
can zoom in to a particular area of interest, switch various data layers on and
off, and save or bookmark the map for later viewing, printing or use in presentations
/ documents.
- Reef Locations have been derived from the
UNEP-WCMC
Biodiversity Map Library: Global Coral Reef Distribution. This dataset was compiled
by digitizing coral reef locations from a large number of sources and maps. ReefGIS,
where possible, overlays this global dataset with high resolution coral reef coverage
from the Millennium Coral Reef Mapping Project.
- The
Millennium Coral Reef Mapping Project
(IMaRS, Univ. South Florida; P.I.: Dr. Serge Andréfouët), classifies and maps coral
reef structures worldwide using Landsat data. This ongoing project is funded by
NASA
, and is an international partnership between numerous organizations and experts.
- Marine Protected Area (MPA) information originates from the Protected Areas Database
compiled by
UNEP-WCMC. The ReefBase Pacific project will
continue to coordinate with other efforts to improve completeness and accuracy of
information relating to MPAs in the Pacific. ReefGIS allows users to access and
view summaries of each MPA and link to the full MPA data sets (see example below)
- Monitoring site data are contributed by multiple groups involved in reef resource
monitoring and are presented here on the ‘Monitoring Site Map’. ReefGIS allows users
to access and view summaries of each monitoring site and link to the implementing
organizations, key contacts and publications relating to that data (see example
below).
Photos
Provided here are a selection of photos which, where possible, illustrate reef fisheries,
reef related livelihoods and reef biodiversity in each Pacific country. This website
also contains a large collection of photos which can be searched and accessed through
the ReefBase Pacific database.
