Halmahera, one important marine area

Posted by Andreas Muljadi Monday, 28 April 2008

In between gut-wrenching dives, I found great sites with excellent coral cover and schools fish of high economic values such as Humpback Groupers, Leopard Coral Groupers, Humphead Wrasses and Indo Pacific King Mackerels. During the same dive I also ran across rare fish and invertebrates, unusual coral growth, even some species I had not seen before, such as Crocodile Fish hiding in a garden of algae, White Pipefish living in Mushroom Corals, 3m high Porites that stands tall as a pillar. These incredible findings make Halmahera a very important marine area for fisheries and biodiversity, and it will need to receive special attention to be properly managed.
